Hello! 🙋🏻♀️
I'm just a college student majoring in design~
I've already become a senior now..
Anyway!
Getting to the point
I've been using TTS literally every day
for my assignments since way back (around 2023?),
and there's one tool I've completely fallen in love with
so I wanted to write about it.
It's a service called Supertone!
I create videos and UI prototypes quite often,
and these days,
adding voice to projects feels like it has better delivery than without it,
it's starting to feel almost essential.
When making app demonstration videos or story videos,
just having subtitles or prototypes alone feels too plain...
At first, I was like
"what should I do, what should I do" and considered recording my own voice,
But then... after hearing my own voice... lol
It wasn't professional enough and was painful to listen to,
so I thought "this isn't going to work"
That's when I started looking for TTS services.
I've been sampling different options since the early days
when TTS wasn't popular (around my sophomore year).
Getting unnatural voices was quite a painful process.
I tried several popular services in Korea and international services too,
!!Supertone! Play!! was absolutely perfect.
Here's why...
First of all, there's such a wide variety of voices;;
There were about 662 different characters
starting with basic male/female voices,
and when you click the button on the left bar, it recommends
and automatically sorts voices that match different age groups and genres,
they even have characters that speak with regional dialects
(there's one called Munsik who creates such amazingly natural
dialect that I've used him a lot when making simple Shorts videos),
and what's really amazing is that
they even have Japanese people speaking Korean accent options lol
For one of my midterm project videos,
I really wanted to include a voice
for a "Japanese person speaking awkward Korean".
It captured that exact feeling perfectly.
Mind-blowing...🤯
One incredibly cool feature I discovered was Voice Cloning,
All I had to do was record my voice
(just reading the script displayed on screen for about 15 seconds)
and the AI learns from it to create an AI voice that sounds like me!!
To be honest, at first I thought, "Yeah right, it'll probably sound robotic,"
but it was shocking how natural and pleasant it sounded,
even more than my actual voice...
You can even make your voice speak Japanese and English.
Totally amazing, right?
I'm still thinking about what content to use this TTS for in the future,
but for those trending Shorts videos that need narration,
instead of using my actual voice,
using the AI voice means my throat doesn't hurt and it's more stable,
so that seems like a good option!
With all these features????
The price isn't burdensome at all for a student
I'm usually the type of person who's always thinking
about cutting down on subscription services,
but I don't feel the need to cancel Supertone...
I'm using it to enhance the quality of both my assignments and portfolio,
so it seems like great value for money.
This is how I see it..
Honestly, design is boring if it only focuses on visuals.
I strongly believe that "the listening experience is also design" these days.
Thanks to Supertone, I've discovered
what it means to give emotion to content and it's been eye-opening.
If you were to use this service, which voice would you want to try?
I'm curious..
Let me know in the comments which voice you'd like to use,
and I'll make a video with it for you!
Next time, I'll tell you which voices I used for which videos!!
